Ready to find the right targeted keywords for your web site?
Choosing the best keywords can bring you loads of good traffic, increasing sales or get you more leads. Choosing the wrong keywords can lead to pain and suffering in the business world and we know you don't want that. So sit down, ask yourself these questions and write down or just ponder your answers:
- What are you selling via your web site?
- This step will tell you what major core keywords you should be concered with. Core keywords are usually one to two word phrases that describe a sort of "elevator pitch" on what you do within about 2 seconds to somebody who has never heard of you or your offering before. Note that core keywords are NOT usually the keywords that you will be targeting for search engine traffic, they are only used to help you move forward to the next step in the keyword selection process. Why? Because most single or even two word phrases are extreamly competative and not feasible enough to expect any significant traffic from in the short run - not that going with these keywords are bad, but there are other ways to get targeted traffic in the least amount of time as possible.
- You can also use the Google adsense keyword tool to brain storm a bit and come up with any related variations and see the search volumes and adwords bidding prices on those words.
- I also love to use dictionary.com's theasaurus option for finding single keyword synonyms. In fact I've used this very same web site to brain-storm synonyms for keywords - even for domain names!
- What are your web site's major themes?
- Once you have your core keyword terms you should now take a hard look at your web site and see what are the most important themes that your visitors will be looking at. The best way to do this is to look at the pages on your website that you think are important for your customers to see, for example, look at your pages that you think will help your customers to decided if they want to make a purchase. Keyword themes are usually 2 to 3 word phrases that are a bit more specific than the core terms from the previous step.
- Cluster your keywords
- Now that you have your major keyword themes we will begin the work to flesh out the keyword themes into clusters. Keyword clusters are more specific word phrases, usually 3 to 5 words, that will comprise the majority of the keyword searches that your users will be searching for in the search engines AND finding your web site in the short run with. As time goes on your visibility will increase for your keyword themes and core keyword terms from the previous two steps, although this can take several months and even years depending on your keyword domain.
- Map your keyword clusters to your theme pages
- It's time to put your keywords to work: mapping your keyword clusters to your main themed (landing) pages. Since your main theme pages on your site are the most visited or sought after by your viewers, doesn't it make sense to place your targeted keyword phrases within those pages? It sure does! Search engines will be able to better understand what your page is about if you place your search phrases in the HTML code of your web page - and searchers will be able to find your web site faster and more often!
